Q. Is Alconox and/or Liquinox an effective detergent for rinsing and removing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from non-porous surfaces (such as excavation equipment)?

A.  We have a great deal of historical experience with Alconox® Powdered Precision Cleaner, remediating PCBs. If you prefer a liquid concentrate, Liquinox® Critical Cleaning Liquid Detergent should work fine as well.

I would start with a higher concentration, perhaps 2-3%, and then optimize as required. Elevated temperatures will help. If used, be sure to rinse with a similar temperature for the first rinse to avoid thermally shocking micelles that form and redeposit the residue you are looking to remove.  In this case, redepositing PCBs,

A good rule of thumb for the amount of detergent required is 400 sq feet per diluted gallon (~ 10 sq meters per liter) for non porous surfaces.  If porous surfaces are in play, plan on a lower amount of area coverage and potentially a higher concentration in the case of PCBs.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are nasty stuff and care should of course be taken care of during the cleaning and rinsing process, as well as the rinse water disposal.  Consult local Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) professionals and regulations as required.
