Q. Bailers used to detect phosphate in surface water sampling gave positive readings in equipment blanks from a poorly rinsed phosphate containing detergent.

A. Per the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard operating procedures for sampling equipment cleaning, you should use “…a phosphate free laboratory grade detergent such as Liquinox detergeny…” to clean with. Make a 1% Liquinox® Critical Cleaning Liquid Detergent solution, if cleaning at ambient temperature, soak bailers or other sampling equipment, typically for 20 or more minutes, scrub with appropriate brushes, rinse with distilled or deionized water.
