Residual Chlorine on Printed Circuit Boards

Q. We have found chlorine present on our printed circuit boards after ultrasonic cleaning and distilled water rinse.  As ultrasonic cleaning detergent, we’re using either Liquinox or Detergent 8, but are unsure which one was used on affected boards.  Could either be contributing to this issue? A. It’s highly unlikely that either detergent, or your cleaning process, is the source of the chlorine residue.  The cleaning process you described, if using detergent at recommended dilution levels, should successfully remove flux and process residues.

Replacing Isopropyl Alcohol in Pharmaceutical Cleaning

Q. I’ve been told that we should no longer use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning our pharmaceutical equipment. What should we use instead? A. In pharmaceutical cleaning applications, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is less than ideal. Alcohol will clean residues which are soluble in alcohol, but that is a limited range.  Using critical cleaning, aqueous detergents are a far more robust and will allow for more effective cleaning processes.

Q. Do you have any suggestions about the shelf life of 1% Tergazyme solution? A. Tergazyme solutions should be used within 8 hours of dissolving the powdered Tergazyme detergent in water. As dry powder, Tergazyme has excellent stability with a shelf life of 2 years from date of manufacture.

Manual Cleaning A 100 Gallon Mixer

Q: We are looking for detergent and process recommendations for manual cleaning of a 100 gallon mixer. We make one product in the mixer which contains water, modified food starch, acidic buffers, sucralose and preservative. Currently when cleaning, we boil for 1 hour at 90°C, then cool, drain and soak in cool water while using the mixing blades.  Scrub brushes and a spray hosing follows that. The mixer is made from stainless steel.
