Q. We are a research lab and would like to know if the powder detergent Alconox serves for decontaminating ethidium bromide on surfaces.
A. Yes, Alconox® Powdered Precision Cleaner is excellent at emulsifying and decontaminating ethidium bromide on surfaces. This mutagenic, teratogenic nucleic acid staining compound should be well decontaminated when cleaned well with Alconox, rinsed and dried. Make sure that all contaminated paper or cloth used to clean are properly disposed of per your local/regional requirements.
