Q: Is Manual or Dishwasher cleaning better for glassware?

A: Depends on how we define better. Manual cleaning can often use more water, especially when rinsing. However, the level of cleaning one can achieve with soaking and cleaning by hand is usually superior. This is due to the increased contact time the detergent has with the soil to solubalize it. Furthermore, the manual cleaners tend to be better emulsifiers forming good micelles leading to effective cleaning.  And of course good old fashioned elbow grease is often very effective.
