Medical Device Cleaning: Martensitic Stainless Steel

Q: We use Alconox on the medical device parts we manufacture that need cleaning before shipment. Alconox detergent is working in an excellent way with austenitic stainless steel parts, but is not working that well with martensitic stainless steel. Actually, at the end of the process cleaning martensitic steel, we notice some marks on the material. Any recommendations?

Q.  What is the difference between Citranox and Citrajet?

A. Both Citranox® Liquid Acid Cleaner and Detergent and Citrajet® Low-Foam Liquid Acid Cleaner/Rinse are acid cleaners that are excellent at removing inorganics, metallic complexes, trace metals and oxides, scale, salts, soil, grit and oils off glass, metal, stainless steel, porcelain, ceramic, plastic rubber and fiberglass. We need to move away from HCl, and dish soap and bleach don’t work. Manual cleaning can be considered but not preferred for the silver oxide.

Q: We reenact Civil War battles and need to clean the bayonets, rifles and assorted other metal parts.  We came across Alconox as a source for safely cleaning these important pieces.  The residues are largely rust and pine tar.  What would you recommend?

A: Cleaning steel used in reenactments as you describe certainly helps in establishing the proper setting for the show.  Cleaning tool steel (also called mild steel) requires a little bit of effort to ensure flash rusting does not occur during rinsing.  To avoid this….
