Q: We have a washer that use both Detojet and a bleach cycle. We would like to optimize. Can we combine? We have read the “Bleach with Detergents for Disinfection?” article.
A: Thanks for being a TechNotes fan!
As the article suggests, you can add bleach to dilute Detojet solutions. As long as the resulting solution is used reasonably promptly, you will have the detergency of Detojet combined with the oxidizing powder of added bleach. Your washer sounds like it can dose in bleach at the wash cycle, so of course the solutions would be used promptly.
As far as optimizing, for 10-minute contact time disinfecting purposes, you can use 5.25% sodium hypochlorite household bleach at a 1-part bleach to 9-parts wash solution ratio (14 oz bleach per gallon of dilute detergent solution). If you want to optimize for sanitary food service food contact surface cleaning it is suggested that you add 1-part 5.25% household bleach to 256-parts wash solution (0.5 oz 5.25% bleach to 1 gallon of dilute detergent wash solution).
Please also note that pure bleach may not be compatible with all washer units – can be corrosive to stainless steel over time – and you should check your manufacturer. The sodium hypochlorite in our detergents do not pose such concerns.
