Q: We have the product Alconox detergent and want to know if it is a good solution for removing mycoplasma.
A: Our Tergazyme® Enzyme-Active Powdered Detergent (video: How to Clean Proteins with Enzymatic Detergent) removes proteinaceous residues more effectively than Alconox powder which does not have proteases. This would be our recommendation for mycoplasma cleaning.
Tergazyme detergent combines the cleaving ability of the enzymes, a powerful emulsifying surfactant, and chelation, to remove biologic proteinaceous films and residues.
No cleaning detergent can guarantee removal of all residues, be they mycoplasma or otherwise, as it depends on a myriad of application specific parameters. These include time, temperature, concentration, rinsing, storage, etc.
We can envision using the Alconox powder being successful verified by your residue detection of the mycoplasma. Tergazyme detergent would be an even better option.
In both cases warm 2-3% solutions and thorough rinsing. For Tergazyme solutions, please use within 8 hours of formulation to ensure enzymatic activity is most optimal, and keep at or below 55C/130F to ensure the proteases are not degraded.
For washer based cleaning, and the need for low foaming detergents, we would take adavatnage of oxidative cleaning mechanisms and go with Alcojet® Low Foaming Powdered Detergent and Detojet® Low Foaming Liquid Detergent for a powdered or liquid option, respectively.
