Q. I’m looking for appropriate cleaning solutions and recommendations for ultrasound probes. We have several types at our facility.
A. Ultrasound equipment is used in applications ranging from pregnancy and blood flow to internal uses including transrectal and transesophageal echocardiograms. Because ultrasound probes and probe covers come in direct contact with human tissue both internal and externally, thorough cleaning and disinfection is absolutely vital. We have long stressed cleaning prior to disinfection as indicated by the CDC, however, the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) also states that “adequate transducer preparation is mandatory.” That preparation is thorough cleaning so the surface can be thoroughly disinfected by a registered EPA disinfectant.
For general cleaning of ultrasound probes and covers we recommend Liquinox® Critical Cleaning Liquid Detergent. A procedure of warm 1-2% (1.25 – 2.5 oz/gal, or 10 -20 mL/L) Liquinox solution, a thorough rinse with clean water, and thorough drying is a tried and trusted procedure.
For internal ultrasound probes, or those that are come into contact with blood, tissue, mucous and other proteinaceous residues, we most highly recommend Tergazyme® Enzyme-Active Powdered Detergent. As noted previously, this will provide the most robust cleaning and removal of organic and protein-based residues to ensure disinfection can proceed. A warm 1-3% solution of Tergazyme detergent and rinse will provide a thoroughly cleaned surface.
Both of these detergents have been used for decades in healthcare and medical device industries for reliable cleaning. It is now more important than ever to have devices and instruments properly cleaned. We’re glad to play our part.
