Q. How can I get better lab cleaning results from my labware washer?

A. Failure to clean successfully often results from loading glassware in a way that it does not drain properly and traps wash solution that then contaminates the glassware during rinsing. For example, the bottom of a large graduated cylinder will trap water in the cup formed by the base of the cylinder when it is loaded in the rack upside down.

Either load this type of graduated cylinder tilted at an angle so the top can drain, or do not wash them in the washer. If tap water is used for rinsing with heated drying, it is not unusual to get water spots on glassware. Deionized water rinsing should solve this if the water spots need to be removed. Presoaking any glassware can also improve results, as well as not letting the soak solution dry out prior to washing. Be sure to completely submerge the glassware when soaking (avoids etching).

Typically a 0.5 – 1% Liquinox® Critical Cleaning Liquid Detergent solution is used, although a 0.5 – 1% Alcojet® Low Foaming Powdered Detergent solution could be if Liquinox cleaner is not handy.
