Choosing Ideal Detergent for Cleaning Metal Parts

Q. We are currently writing a protocol for conducting a process validation activity for our cleaning procedures for metal parts after our machining manufacturing process. What are the differences between cleaning effectiveness of Alconox detergent for cleaning various metallic surfaces such as stainless steel, titanium and cobalt chrome? Also, does Alconox detergent effectiveness change based on contamination characteristics, surface geometry or any other factors?

Water Spots on Stainless? Improve Blowing Process

Q. White spots appear on our stainless steel parts the day after cleaning with Alconox. Right after we clean them, they are dry and visually clean. So, is this next-day residue from the Alconox detergent? If not, can you tell us why this is happening? A. It is fairly unlikely that visually clean parts have Alconox residues suddenly appearing the next day.  In addition to Alconox being free rinsing, any residue that did not get rinsed for whatever reason, would be visible fairly immediately.

Most people in similar situations, even though the parts appear “dry and visually clean,” find that the spots are from water.

Removing Cutting Oil, Linoleic Acid from Parts

Q: Some metalwork pieces have a residue of linoleic acid (traced back to the cutting oil) that remains after ultrasonic cleaning with Alconox® detergent. Will Alconox® will fully dissolve linoleic acid? Can you recommend a cleaning process to ensure complete removal of all linoleic acid residue from our parts?

A: Alconox® Powdered Precision Cleaner will not dissolve, but will emulsify, the linoleic acid on your machined parts. In order to get a linoleic-acid-free clean, increase

Unclogging Abrasive Media in Waterjet machining

Q. I am wondering if ultrasonic cleaning would work to unclog waterjet mixing tubes. The mixing tubes are 1/4″ dia. carbide x 4″ long with a .040″ dia. hole. Occasionally the abrasive media gets clogged in the tube.
A. Yes, use a high dispersing detergent such as Alconox. Be sure to mount the tubes … Read More.
