Q: We’re looking to add a detergent to our paintball formulation (PEG 300 base with calcium carbonate) to make the paint easier to wash off surfaces with rainwater. Can Alconox or Liquinox detergents work for this application, considering the paintballs may contact human skin?

A: This is certainly an interesting application that falls outside our typical expertise in critical cleaning for laboratory, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. While we appreciate the innovative thinking behind incorporating detergents into paintball formulations for easier cleanup, there are several important considerations that make our products unsuitable for this specific application.

First and foremost, none of our detergents are designed or tested for direct application to human skin. They are hard surface cleaners: glass, metals, plastics, flooring, filter media, and in some cases fabrics.

While Alconox® Powdered Precision Cleaner and Liquinox® Critical Cleaning Liquid Detergent are relatively mild compared to industrial cleaners—with Alconox at pH 9.5 and Liquinox at pH 8.5—they’re formulated specifically for cleaning laboratory glassware, medical devices, manufacturing equipment, etc. When these products contact skin during normal cleaning operations, users wear appropriate PPE and rinse thoroughly afterward. Direct, intentional application to skin, especially in an entertainment context where proper rinsing might not occur immediately, can lead to skin irritation, drying, etc. that are common to even relatively mild detergents that don’t have additives like emollients. (Emollients and other ingredients like dyes and fragrances, common in B2C detergents, are not free-rinsing and therefore not used our critical cleaning products.)

The formulation compatibility presents another significant challenge. Our detergents are designed to work in aqueous systems, not in polyethylene glycol bases. Alconox detergent, being a powder, contains various salts and surfactants optimized for dissolution in water. Liquinox, while a liquid concentrate, is a water-based solution with surfactants and builders specifically selected for aqueous cleaning systems. The surfactant systems in both products rely on water to form micelles and provide cleaning action—mechanisms that simply won’t function properly in PEG 300.

You’re correct in noting that calcium carbonate itself isn’t soluble in PEG 300, existing instead as a suspension. However, adding our detergent components to this system wouldn’t create the cleaning enhancement you’re seeking. The detergent components that make our products effective—the surfactants, chelators, and builders—need water to activate their cleaning mechanisms. In a PEG-based system, they would likely remain inert or potentially destabilize your formulation without providing the intended cleaning benefit when rainwater eventually contacts the dried paint.

For paintball applications, you need ingredients specifically designed for cosmetic or recreational use that can function in non-aqueous systems while remaining safe for incidental skin contact. This might include cosmetic-grade surfactants or emulsifiers that are compatible with PEG systems and have established safety profiles for skin contact. These specialized ingredients would need to remain stable in your PEG 300 base during storage, not interfere with the paintball’s flight characteristics or shell integrity, and then activate upon contact with water to aid in removal.

We recommend consulting with cosmetic formulators or companies specializing in recreational products who can provide ingredients specifically designed and tested for human skin contact. They would have the expertise to recommend surfactants or other additives that are both safe for your intended use and compatible with your PEG-based formulation system.

We can be very helpful in potentially cleaning reusable equipment from some of these difficult residues, as well as laundry applications: Cleaning Coveralls and Other Potentially Contaminated PPE and Sanitizing Uniforms Amid COVID-19

We remain available for any critical cleaning needs in laboratory, pharmaceutical, medical device, or industrial manufacturing settings where our products are designed to excel.
