How to: Clean Aluminum Nitride (AlN)

Q: We need to clean some general residues from aluminum nitride (AlN) components. We have Alconox powder on hand. Should we use that?

A: Aluminum nitride is a high-performance ceramic material valued across medical, electronics, and industrial applications primarily for its exceptional thermal conductivity and electrical insulation properties. It is widely used as a substrate in power electronics, heat spreaders, and semiconductor packaging. One important material characteristic to keep in mind when selecting a cleaning approach is that AlN is susceptible to alkaline attack, meaning prolonged or repeated exposure to high-pH solutions can degrade the surface through hydrolysis.

With that in mind, while Alconox® Powdered Precision Cleaner is a fairly mild alkaline cleaner at a pH of around 9.5, it is nonetheless alkaline. It might be acceptable for a very short-contact cleaning cycle followed by a thorough rinse, but given the sensitivity of AlN to alkaline conditions, why take that chance when a better option is available?

We recommend cleaning with a warm 2% Citranox® Liquid Acid Cleaner and Detergent solution (20 mL/L) followed by a thorough water rinse. Citranox detergent is a mild acid cleaner and is much less likely to attack alkaline-labile AlN, making it a far safer choice for this substrate. It handles general residues effectively while respecting the chemistry of the material you are cleaning.
